Ubuntu (and Ubuntu-Au) in the Press. Again!

Can you guess which distribution this article in The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald is referring to? ;)

"Linux is shedding its hard-core techie image in a bid to woo ordinary human beings seeking an easy-to-use operating system that can be downloaded for free."

Even our own Melissa Draper (elkbuntu) gets a mention!

Customising Ubuntu for Australian Conditions

Choosing Australia as your location during the Ubuntu install sets up a lot of local settings. However there are a few things you can do to further customise Ubuntu for use here.

A page of local customisations has been established on the Ubuntu Help wiki.

If you're aware of further customisations that can be done, feel free to add them to that page. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can email [david.symons AT liberatedcomputing.net] and he'll do the editing for you.

Ubuntu on another Cover DVD

For all of you going grey waiting for ShipIt:

September PC World magazine has Ubuntu 6.06 LTS on its cover DVD!

It too works like an Ubuntu Desktop CD - boots to the live environment and offers the graphical installer. Again, you'll need to have a DVD reader to use it.

Software Freedom Day 2006

For information on this year's Software Freedom Day, please see the appropriate sub-page of http://softwarefreedomday.org/teams/oceania.

Team Meeting Changed to Monday Nights

At the June 27 meeting, it was decided that a poll would be held to redecide the night that the team IRC meeting should be on. At the meeting on July 11, it was decided to respect the results of the poll, and change the meeting to Monday nights. This makes the next meeting 1000 UTC on Monday, July 24.

Update: Ubuntu-Au approved!

As of today, June 28th, the Australian Local Community Team was approved as an official, Canonical-recognised team!

The upshot of this is that it means our work is actually recognisable, and that we're achieving! Congratulations everyone!
